Carbon tetrachloride is a clear, colorless, non-flammable, halogenated, organic liquid with a distinctive odor that evaporates easily. It is also called carbon chloride, methane tetrachloride, perchloromethane, tetrachloroethane, or benziform. It is toxic when absorbed through the skin or when inhaled. Exposure to this substance results mostly from breathing air, drinking water, or coming in contact with soil that is contaminated with it. Exposure to very high amounts of carbon tetrachloride can damage the liver, kidneys, and nervous system.

Shape
In the carbon tetrachloride molecule, four chlorine atoms are positioned symmetrically around in a tetrahedron shape joined to a central carbon atom by single covalent bonds. This symmetrical geometry of CCl4 makes it non-polar.The only intermolcecular force acting upon this compound is London Dispersion Forces (LDF). LDF is a weak force between any and every 2 molecules and can be easily broken. It has a VSEPR model of AX4 making it a tetrahedron.
Uses
Carbon tetrachloride does not occur naturally but has been produced in large quantities to make refrigeration fluid and propellants for aerosol cans. Since many refrigerants and aerosol propellants have been found to affect the earth's ozone layer, the production of these chemicals is being phased out. In the past, carbon tetrachloride was widely used as a cleaning fluid, in industry and dry cleaning establishments as a degreasing agent, and in households as a spot remover for clothing, furniture, and carpeting. Carbon tetrachloride was also used in fire extinguishers and as a fumigant to kill insects in grain. Most of these uses were discontinued in the mid-1960s.
